If you have heard me talk about my involvement with Flashes of Hope you have realized how passionate I am about it and about finding a cure for pediatric cancer. But why?  I have a healthy son who has grown into a strong wonderful young man.  Yes my life has been touched by cancer, my father passed away from cancer and it seems like too many friends have too. But why Flashes?  It started in 2008 with wanting to use my photography to give back.  As fate would have it I stumbled upon Flashes of Hope and the incredible Ben Neeley Bruce who brought the chapter to Charlotte.  After my first shoot I was hooked.  The experience was life changing and it reinforced my belief that everyone should have portraits ( real portraits to display – not just a cd) to cherish forever.  I have been involved with Flashes for four years now and the last two have been the chapter director here in Charlotte after the passing of Bev. After each shoot I feel, joy in meeting the families and children, sadness for what they all have to go through, frustration as to why these children have to experience cancer, madness for it is not fair, and a desire to do more.  After each shoot I am in awe at the beauty these children have in the way they embrace the world.  You don't see them mad, or sad  you see happy kids. Happy kids mind you that know words like chemo, cell counts, neuroblastoma, IV, port – words in my opinion should not be in their vocabulary.  The other day I heard a song on the radio that brought me back to the Children's hospital – There goes a fighter by Gym Class Heroes. That is exactly what I see at each shoot – A FIGHTER.

They are in the biggest fight of their lives, one that most of us will never experience in our lifetime.  This brings out my desire to do more, I want to be a fighter to make a difference. This is where my passion lies, I believe that we all can make difference, we just need to move forward from thinking about wanting to help to doing.
