When my good friend, Kristine, described Flashes of Hope and asked our group of girlfriends at dinner who would be interested in joining forces to lead a Houston Chapter, I jumped at the opportunity to get involved. I had just finished my PhD and was changing positions at MD Anderson Cancer Center where I had studied late effects of chemotherapy and radiation in pediatric cancer survivors. I had also worked at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital where I had been exposed to children being treated for cancer, and I felt that this new venture was a way to stay connected with pediatric cancer patients. With Kristine's love of photography and my passion for, and professional interest in, pediatric cancer research, it seemed like a match made in heaven and that it has been!

Our first shoot was held for in-patients at Texas Children's Hospital Cancer and Hematology Center in July 2008. There are definitely shoots and patients/families that stand out in my mind, but the emotion that probably hits me the hardest is that of the first shoot that I attended after the birth of my first son in January 2009. I am sure that hormones played a role, but I will never forget the feelings that overcame me. I was now a mom looking at these children (and their moms) in a completely different light. I had worked with kids and parents for so many years in a similar environment, but never had I thought "this could be me." I had to leave the room that day and have a good cry, but I quickly composed myself, because I knew it was my job to bring the gift of pictures to the families we were fortunate enough to meet.

Over four years later, we've photographed hundreds of kids and their families. I can now get through a shoot without crying, but I often think back on that day that changed the way I look at life. I am thankful to Flashes of Hope for tangibly helping me understand how precious life is, and I am grateful that I am able to play a role in capturing it on film for these families!
